There is a real difference between leadership& dictatorship yet some think that is what a leader is.

I have been to many seminars, luncheons etc where these "Expert" leaders will change our world. Unfortunately I have walked away disappointed as it has been a self promotion only on how they have become overnight experts with no real content & my wallet a lot lighter.

I am lucky in my career & life to have come across & be surrounded by some true leaders. Are they "Experts" no.

To me no one can define themselves as an "Expert" an "Expert" would be a person who is knowledgeable in every aspect of their business to the highest degree.

Leadership qualities to me are:

  • Competence- being qualified and compliant within your business.

  • Respect- respect for your staff and the expertise they bring to the business

  • Inspiration-ally informed- keeping up to date on all industry trends, compliance and having a willingness to ask for assistance in the things they don't know.

The best way to do this is through developing strong & credible processes & policies. Supplying both internal and external training increases retention & job security for your team so proper process in relation to staff inductions and safety is crucial.

Informal and formal mentoring are effective measures to demonstrate leadership.

  • Informal mentoring- is a natural occurring spontaneous communication with you team.

  • Formal mentoring- is through correspondence, face to face, structured and accredited training for your staff and yourself.

A good leader takes personal responsibility to keep an open mind as there is no one size fits all approach. This also takes training, engaging external individual "experts" in many areas of your business gets a remarkable return on investment.

To me a real leader is a person that can eat humble pie, & be genuine about the knowledge they lack. A true leader is a person who surrounds themselves with "experts" in differing fields, whether they be internal or external to their business.
